Buspirone
Mental Health · 5-HT1A partial agonist
Tier B
What this is
Overshadowed by benzodiazepines and SSRIs but a legitimate non-addictive, non-sedating anxiolytic for chronic GAD. Slow onset frustrates patients expecting benzodiazepine-speed effects. Often combined with SSRIs as augmentation.
Mechanism
Partial agonist at 5-HT1A receptors; weak D2 antagonist; no sedation, no tolerance, no addiction potential unlike benzodiazepines; used for chronic GAD
Dose & route
15-60 mg/day PO divided (2-3x/day)
