2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL human milk oligosaccharide)
Immune & Inflammation · Human milk oligosaccharide / prebiotic
Tier B
What this is
A more specific prebiotic than the usual inulin/FOS bucket. The 2025 Stanford/Abbott older-adult RCT missed its primary cytokine-response endpoint but increased Bifidobacterium and shifted serum insulin, HDL, FGF21, metabolites, and proteomic signals; Bifidobacterium responders showed additional metabolic/proteomic changes and better visual-memory performance. Interesting healthy-aging microbiome lever, but responder biology and industry-funding caveats matter.
Mechanism
Selective human-milk-oligosaccharide prebiotic that feeds HMO-utilizing Bifidobacterium species, modulates mucosal immune signaling, gut metabolites, gut barrier biology, and systemic metabolic/immune markers.
Dose & route
Adult studies have used 3-20 g/day depending on protocol; start lower (1-3 g/day) and titrate to product/study dose as tolerated.
