Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone/ubiquinol)
CV/Lipid · Electron transport cofactor
Tier B
What this is
Mortensen Q-SYMBIO 2014 showed mortality benefit in NYHA III-IV heart failure. Statin-myopathy data mixed but meta-analyses now lean positive for CoQ10. Ubiquinol form recommended for age >50 due to reduced conversion capacity. Fat-soluble — take with meal.
Mechanism
Essential component of mitochondrial electron transport chain (complex III) and membrane antioxidant; endogenous synthesis declines with age and statin use (shared mevalonate pathway)
Dose & route
100-300 mg/day PO with fat; ubiquinol form better absorbed in older adults
