Blood levels have decreased since PFOA phase-out but replacement chemistries (GenX, ADONA) may have similar issues. **Regulatory status changed materially and this row names one of the affected chemicals.** On **20 May 2026** the EPA issued proposed rules partially unwinding the 2024 national PFAS drinking-water regulation. The **4 ppt limits for PFOA and PFOS are retained**, but EPA proposes to **rescind the limits for GenX (HFPO-DA), PFHxS, PFNA and the Hazard Index** covering those three plus PFBS — GenX being named in this entry's own title. The compliance deadline for PFOA/PFOS stays 26 Apr 2029, with systems able to apply for a two-year extension to 26 Apr 2031. **This is a proposal, not settled law**: the comment period closed 20 Jul 2026 after a 7 Jul hearing, and a final rule had not issued as of this review. Several states are moving to set their own limits regardless. Nothing here changes the toxicology — it changes what the federal floor will be, and for GenX specifically whether there is one at all.
