Fluoride (high-dose)
Toxins · Controversial
High priority
What this is
Long one of the most politically charged 'toxins' discussions. NTP 2024 monograph was the first US federal report to acknowledge association of high-exposure fluoride with reduced child IQ — applies to levels roughly 2x typical US community fluoridation. Federal judge Edward Chen ruled Sept 2024 that EPA must address fluoride under TSCA. Expect evolving regulation.
Mechanism
Added to community water supply at ~0.7 ppm for caries prevention (established since 1940s); excess (>1.5 mg/L natural) causes dental/skeletal fluorosis; recent controversy over neurodevelopmental effects at higher exposures
Dose & route
Well water testing if >1.5 mg/L natural fluoride; fluoride-free toothpaste for young children at risk of swallowing; otherwise community-fluoridated water is net beneficial
